Once we have learned what kind and how much fat we need, we should take a closer look at the question of protein, because the liver needs a supply of good protein for maximum efficiency. Pulses, that is, peas, beans and lentils, as well as milk, are excellent sources of protein. Milk protein is the best type for the liver. Not only the sick person benefits from protein taken in the form of sour milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese and curds, but anyone who is healthy too.
If a patient suffering from a liver disorder wishes to eat some meat protein, the meat should be grilled, never fried. Avoid fatty cuts or meat that was cooked in its own fat. Very lean, muscular meat, preferably veal or beef, is the best for the patient who thinks he cannot do without it. Since pork is the most harmful of all meats, it should be eliminated from the diet. Among the divine laws given to the Israelites was one forbidding them to eat pork and, as it so happened, this abstinence proved to be in the interest of their health.

Conservative treatment of appendicitis, that is, without operating, is primarily based on a juice diet and bed rest. Carrot, beetroot, bilberry and grape juices are particularly recommended for the cure. One part of juice should be diluted with two parts of good spring water. Sip the liquid slowly, allowing it to become well insalivated before swallowing. Add to 100 ml (4 fluid oz) of juice about 20-30 drops of Echinaforce. The burning sensation can be relieved by applying cold milk packs and nausea can be controlled with Nux vomica 4x, five drops to a glass of water, taken in small sips.
From the beginning it is very important to empty the bowels. For this purpose, take a harmless laxative tea or herbal laxative such as Rasayana No. 1 or Linoforce. If the bowels fail to react quickly, an enema is called for. Either camomile, mallow (cheese plant) or sanicle tea can be used, preferably with twenty drops of Echinaforce or Symphosan tincture added.

Mountain guides in Switzerland know of and use another good remedy, namely marmot oil, and a teaspoonful of this taken daily is said to induce sleep. Since it is not too palatable it is best taken in the form of gelatin capsules, or followed by a strong herbal drink.
Of course, do not forget the habit of going to bed early, perhaps going even earlier than usual so as to be in bed well before midnight, because sleep during these hours will conserve your health and energy.
Remember, too, that retiring on a full stomach is not conducive to a good night’s rest and is usually responsible for bad dreams. It is important when we eat, and how much and what we eat. Supper, as the last regular meal of the day, should not be taken at 8 or 9 p.m. or even later in the evening; that would be asking for trouble. If at all possible, we should have a light, easily digested meal shortly after 6 p.m. After supper, take a short walk and breathe deeply. This will aid the digestion and ensure a good night’s healthy sleep.

Iodine is a peculiar substance that still puzzles research scientists. Taken in great quantity it is a dangerous poison; on the other hand, the body cannot exist without it. Iodine is one of the elements that the body needs only in minute quantities, a trace element; at the same time, it is of such importance that it may be compared
to the push button that is needed to start and stop a sophisticated piece of machinery. The human body contains approximately 0.05 g of iodine, half of which is found in the muscular system, one-tenth in the skin and a large portion in the endocrine glands, especially the thyroid. Here we find iodine attached to an amino acid, forming the hormone called thyroxine.
It is interesting to note that the so-called iodine level, that is the amount of iodine contained in the blood, is the same for all healthy people, no matter where they live, whether in the mountains, by the sea, in the polar regions or at the equator.

When the veins cease to function efficiently the circulation becomes impaired and varicose veins develop (‘varicose’ is derived from the Latin word varix – a dilated vein). This frequently happens during pregnancy and immediately after childbirth and should be tackled at once, for neglect at this stage will, slowly but surely, lead to
further trouble. Lack of care of the venous system can bring on thrombosis and embolism. If a good pregnancy is desired, an easy labour and a trouble-free time after birth, look after the veins!
