When the veins cease to function efficiently the circulation becomes impaired and varicose veins develop (‘varicose’ is derived from the Latin word varix – a dilated vein). This frequently happens during pregnancy and immediately after childbirth and should be tackled at once, for neglect at this stage will, slowly but surely, lead to
further trouble. Lack of care of the venous system can bring on thrombosis and embolism. If a good pregnancy is desired, an easy labour and a trouble-free time after birth, look after the veins!
