BACH FLOWER REMEDIES: RED CHESTNUT – MRS. MALHOTRA’S CASE

Posted: under Herbal.

Once I was treating one Mrs. Malhotra, aged 48 years, for shifting pains in nerves. She was a peculiar AGRIMONY type, very suave, cultured and ever smiling, although very tortured inside by a very belligerent BEECH TYPE husband.I tried my best to give the patient permanent relief out of sympathy for the patient and because the case looked quite challenging but the indicated remedy could only give temporary relief. One day while discussing Red Chestnut in the manuscript of this book, the light dawned on me that I was myself guilty of negative Red Chestnutism in the case of Mrs. Malhotra in showing over-anxiety for her, and may be that was the cause of the patient not responding to treatment.Thence forward I ceased taking special care of this case, and as if a road block had been cleared, there was considerable change for the better in the progress of the case after that.*164\308\8*

BACH FLOWER REMEDIES AS A USEFUL ADJUNCT TO OTHER MEDICINES: FAILURE OF BACH REMEDIES

Posted: under Herbal.

Bach Flower Remedies can be used as a useful adjunct to other systems of medicines — allopathic, homeopathic or Ayurvedic. They do not interfere with the working of other medicines and they do not have any side effects or reaction by themselves.
Failure of Bach Remedies
They say that Bach Flower Remedies never fail provided the doctor and the patient fully cooperate.
But, what could Bach Flower Remedies do if the doctor or the patient loses faith midway and stops treatment ? There are also some patients who do not want to get well, lest they lose the privilege of special attention they receive because of their ailment.
There are also some patients who have been goaded to try Bach Flower Remedies against their expressed will. They deliberately reject the beneficial effects of the Flower Remedies.
There are some patients who lack patience. They want instant relief even if their malady has developed over a number of years. They do not allow enough time to the Flower Remedies to act.
Then there are some patients who do not visit the doctor themselves, but send some body to collect the medicine after briefly telling the symptom, and the emissary tells the doctor a translated version of the symptom leading to wrong prescription. Thus for example, if the patient has said, that he cannot leave the bed in the morning and lies awake for a considerable time, and the message conveyed to the doctor is ‘He feels too weak to get up in the morning’. The medicine prescribed would be OLIVE, which would be wrong. It should be HORN BEAM.
Similarly, if the patient complained that he has such an excruciating pain in the leg that he would like to cut it away, and the message conveyed to the doctor is in such words “The patient is suffering from terrible pain” the prescription would be CHERRY PLUM which would be again wrong. The correct remedy would be CRAB APPLE.
So when the Bach Flower Remedies fail to act, it should not be construed that the Flower Remedies have failed and the doctor should not get discouraged.

NATURAL SLEEP – HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED? (EXPERIMENT)

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

Try this way of life as an experiment either during your holidays or when you are convalescing from an illness. Instead of going out in the evenings on some social occasion that may last far into the night, take the opportunity to enjoy some natural sleep several hours before midnight. If, during our holidays, we accustom ourselves to this way of life, perhaps when we return home we may succeed in cancelling our social obligations on two or three weekday nights in order to enjoy the regenerative power of natural sleep. Our business and social life will actually benefit, for our energies and strength will be renewed. If, on the other hand, we behave like most people on holiday and stay up all hours of the night indulging in social life to the full, then we should not be surprised if our body and mind are still tired once it is over.

MISCELLANEOUS TOPICS – INTENSE HEAT AND ITS DANGERS

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

I am always reminded of visiting a hospitable desert Bedouin in his tent whenever someone complains about a hot summer’s day in my native Switzerland, where cold and rainfall are well known but not real drought. In the shade of his black goat’s-hair tent the temperature must have been around 40 °C (104 °F) and the air outside was shimmering in the heat. In spite of this the bearded man, whose deeply lined face betrayed his advanced age, served me hot tea. I was astonished and wanted to know the reason. His answer was quick. It was completely wrong, he said, to drink cold water in the intense heat; it would only increase the thirst instead of quenching it. And so would sweet drinks, he added. It would be asking for trouble and not healthy either. At the time of our conversation I was still doubtful about his conclusion, but eventually it was confirmed by my own personal experience. It is really true that a hot drink or juicy fruit are better than anything else to quench one’s thirst in the heat. What is more, they may prevent you from catching a cold, but there is no guarantee for that if you gulp down ice-cold beverages.

It is also important to breathe through the nose when it is very hot, not only when you are in the cold. The nose is equipped with a built-in air-conditioning system, or temperature control, which warms up the incoming air in the winter and cools it down in the summer.

WHEN FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS ARE OVEREMPHASISED

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

The subject of dairy farming leads me to comment on a strange policy among some dairy farmers. There are some farmers who muzzle calves to prevent them from eating hay or aftermath. By feeding them only on milk their flesh will remain white, the idea being, of course, that white meat fetches a better price. This view of things, aided and abetted by the consumer, is extremely shortsighted, because red meat is of better nutritional value. However since the white meat is more tender, it is also more expensive.

The same principle applies to white bread, white rolls and other white flour products, showing once more the power of advertising and how demands are created to spoil the palate so that artificially prepared foods with all their additives seem to taste better. The knowledge that they are greatly inferior to products made from whole cereals is simply ignored. If one continues to eat white bread, lack of fibre will soon weaken the peristalsis of the intestines and lead to constipation, which, in turn, encourages a host of other troubles that will ultimately be dealt with by injections and all sorts of harmful drugs and medicines. One mistake after another is made and, sooner or later, the price for choosing one’s food according to the dictates of the palate will have to be paid for by chronic ill health and physical suffering.

How much wiser it would be to adapt oneself to the more healthy foods, which give a true sensation of taste, instead of the cultivated taste for the artificial. It is not only the individual who would be the ultimate beneficiary from eating natural health foods, but the economy of the land would be boosted as well.

BERRIES – FRUIT SPRAYED WITH PESTICIDES (INTRODUCTION)

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

As more instances of poisoning from eating fruit sprayed with pesticides come to our attention, we would do well to consider the different aspects of this dangerous practice.

Some people do not react immediately to poisons such as lead, arsenic and copper sulphate used in sprays, being less sensitive. Others are more sensitive and immediately show signs of poisoning upon eating sprayed fruit. Be it as it may, when buying fruit one should make sure it has not been sprayed. It is common to find blemishes or an occasional brown spot on fruit that has not been treated with insecticides, but the fruit is still edible and its goodness is not impaired, since these blemishes are harmless plant fungi.

HELPFUL DIETS FOR THE SICK A – AVOID FRIED AND ALL DENATURED, REFINED FOOD (SUGGESTIONS FOR A HEALTH DIET) – BREAKFAST

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

In planning a healthy diet, the following suggestions should provide some useful guidance.

For breakfast to be nourishing and wholesome, the ideal foundation is muesli with apples or other seasonal fruit. Add nuts and wholegrain flakes to enrich it further. A highly nutritive addition is whole wheat, first soaked and then put through the mincer. Raisins or sultanas can be mixed with the wheat before it is minced; these are excellent for the blood. A level tablespoon of ground linseed may also be added if constipation is a problem. Use honey or grape sugar to sweeten.

Crispbread, wholewheat or whole grain bread (for example Vogel’s Whole Grain Flake Bread) with a little butter, honey or rose hip conserve can follow the muesli. If you like, sprinkle some wheat germ on the bread or over the muesli.

THE PROTEIN PROBLEM – INTRODUCTION

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

Once we have learned what kind and how much fat we need, we should take a closer look at the question of protein, because the liver needs a supply of good protein for maximum efficiency. Pulses, that is, peas, beans and lentils, as well as milk, are excellent sources of protein. Milk protein is the best type for the liver. Not only the sick person benefits from protein taken in the form of sour milk, yogurt, or cottage cheese and curds, but anyone who is healthy too.

If a patient suffering from a liver disorder wishes to eat some meat protein, the meat should be grilled, never fried. Avoid fatty cuts or meat that was cooked in its own fat. Very lean, muscular meat, preferably veal or beef, is the best for the patient who thinks he cannot do without it. Since pork is the most harmful of all meats, it should be eliminated from the diet. Among the divine laws given to the Israelites was one forbidding them to eat pork and, as it so happened, this abstinence proved to be in the interest of their health.

POISONING OF THE STOMACH AND INTESTINES – NON-SURGICAL TREATMENT

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

Conservative treatment of appendicitis, that is, without operating, is primarily based on a juice diet and bed rest. Carrot, beetroot, bilberry and grape juices are particularly recommended for the cure. One part of juice should be diluted with two parts of good spring water. Sip the liquid slowly, allowing it to become well insalivated before swallowing. Add to 100 ml (4 fluid oz) of juice about 20-30 drops of Echinaforce. The burning sensation can be relieved by applying cold milk packs and nausea can be controlled with Nux vomica 4x, five drops to a glass of water, taken in small sips.

From the beginning it is very important to empty the bowels. For this purpose, take a harmless laxative tea or herbal laxative such as Rasayana No. 1 or Linoforce. If the bowels fail to react quickly, an enema is called for. Either camomile, mallow (cheese plant) or sanicle tea can be used, preferably with twenty drops of Echinaforce or Symphosan tincture added.

INSOMNIA – REMEDY

Posted: under Herbal.
Tags: Herbal

Mountain guides in Switzerland know of and use another good remedy, namely marmot oil, and a teaspoonful of this taken daily is said to induce sleep. Since it is not too palatable it is best taken in the form of gelatin capsules, or followed by a strong herbal drink.

Of course, do not forget the habit of going to bed early, perhaps going even earlier than usual so as to be in bed well before midnight, because sleep during these hours will conserve your health and energy.

Remember, too, that retiring on a full stomach is not conducive to a good night’s rest and is usually responsible for bad dreams. It is important when we eat, and how much and what we eat. Supper, as the last regular meal of the day, should not be taken at 8 or 9 p.m. or even later in the evening; that would be asking for trouble. If at all possible, we should have a light, easily digested meal shortly after 6 p.m. After supper, take a short walk and breathe deeply. This will aid the digestion and ensure a good night’s healthy sleep.
